Hartberg Museum, Hartberg, Styria (Austria)

The museum of the town of Hartberg is situated in the medieval Steinpeißhaus. The design for the extension of the building integrates the terraces and natural stone walls of the immediate surroundings into the whole concept. Visual and spatial connections make it possible to take up and continue historical axes. The multipurpose room of the museum is lowered to the level of the nearby archaeological excavations which are protected by the simplest means. This leads to the emergence of linearity in content, reaching from the past to the present, thus including and intensifying the existing character of the place.
